The Baldwin Effect Revisited: Three Steps Characterized by the Quantitative Evolution of Phenotypic Plasticity

چکیده
An interaction between evolution and learning called the Baldwin effect has been known for a century, but it is still poorly appreciated. This paper reports on a computational approach focusing on the quantitative evolution of phenotypic plasticity in complex environment so as to investigate its benefit and cost. For this purpose, we investigate the evolution of connection weights in a neural network under the assumption of epistatic interactions. Phenotypic plasticity is introduced into our model, in which whether each connection weight is plastic or not is genetically defined and connection weights with plasticity can be adjusted by learning. The simulation results have clearly shown that the evolutionary scenario consists of three steps characterized by transitions of the phenotypic plasticity and phenotypic variation, in contrast with the standard interpretation of the Baldwin effect that consists of two steps. We also conceptualize this evolutionary scenario by using a hillclimbing image of a population on a fitness landscape.

The Dynamic Changes in Roles of Learning through the Baldwin Effect
The interaction between evolution and learning called the Baldwin effect is a two-step evolutionary scenario caused by the balances between benefit and cost of learning in general. However, little is known about the dynamic evolution of these balances in complex environments. Our purpose is to give a new insight into the benefit and cost of learning by focusing on the quantitative evolution of ...
متن کاملUndermining the Baldwin expediting effect: does phenotypic plasticity accelerate evolution?
The claim that phenotypic plasticity speeds up evolution towards a target phenotype is a recent incarnation of the Baldwin effect. To differentiate this theory from earlier interpretations of Baldwin's ideas, we name it the Baldwin expediting effect. Models that demonstrate this effect assume an extreme fitness scenario which bestows high fitness upon a single optimal phenotype and treats all o...
متن کاملBaldwin effect under multipeaked fitness landscapes: phenotypic fluctuation accelerates evolutionary rate.
Phenotypic fluctuations and plasticity can generally affect the course of evolution, a process known as the Baldwin effect. Several studies have recast this effect and claimed that phenotypic plasticity accelerates evolutionary rate (the Baldwin expediting effect); however, the validity of this claim is still controversial. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary population dynamics of a...

متن کاملInteractions between learning and evolution: the outstanding strategy generated by the Baldwin effect.
The Baldwin effect is known as an possible interaction between learning and evolution, where individual lifetime learning can influence the course of evolution without using any Lamarckian mechanism. Our concern is to consider the Baldwin effect in dynamic environments, especially when there is no explicit optimal solution through generations and this solution depends only on interactions among...
